The Bible passages that command trial and execution of prisoners do not connote a "lynch mob." Rather, they call for an orderly system of justice. Judges were instituted (Exo. 18:13-16; cf. Deut. 1:16, 17; 19:15-21), along with a multi-tier judicial system with (to use the modern terminology) a justice of the peace over every ten families, a local magistrate over every fifty families, a district court judge over every hundred families, a circuit court of appeals over every one thousand families, and Moses himself as the Supreme Court.
