As the U.S. Constitution requires regarding Presidents and Vice-Presidents (Article II, sect. 1:4), in Israel foreigners were excluded from holding public office (Deut. 17:15). The danger of foreigners holding public office can be seen with King Solomon, who married many foreign wives, which turned his heart to foreign gods (1 Ki. 11:1-13). As Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters" (Matt. 6:24). There is no neutrality in political affairs. Either an individual is loyal to God or to foreign gods.
