The Bible recognizes the reality of war (Neh. 4:7-18; Eccl. 3:8; Joel 3:10; Matt. 24:6-7; Luke 11:21-22; 14:31-32). The ruler is God’s avenger to bring wrath on evildoers, and the symbol of his authority is the sword, and instrument of death (Rom. 13:4). Israel was commanded to have an army of armed men (Deut. 20).
